Film fest secures snowboard epic

Queenstown’s Adventure Film Festival has at the last minute secured the rights to screen a groundbreaking new snowboard documentary.

The festival, which kicks off tomorrow night with sessions running through till Sunday night at Reading Cinemas, has added extra screenings to accommodate action sports flick The Art of Flight.

The Curt Morgan film took two years to make and follows star snowboarder Travis Rice and his hand-picked buddies as they push to redefine what’s possible in the mountains.

Film festival boss Malcolm Blakey says he’d been trying to get the film for ages and just found out they were allowed to run it.

“It’s such an awesome film that we didn’t want to not put it in the festival.  Therefore we have created two special screenings to show it.”

The 90-minute extravaganza will screen on its own midnight tomorrow and 9am on Sunday at Reading Cinemas. The sessions are $10 each.

The Art of Flight promotional material promises viewers a showcase of new tricks and the discovery of new zones in previously unexplored mountain terrain.

On top of that there’s a few avalanches, accidents and wrong-turns.

Rice and his mates – who include some of the top riders of our time – take on unchartered snow in Chile’s Darwin Range at Patagonia, Tordrillo Range in Alaska, Wyoming’s Snake River Range, Aspen and the Andes.

“Equal parts action and adventure mix with the inevitable drama encountered along the way, presenting viewers with an exclusive opportunity to appreciate firsthand what it feels like to take part in these exhilarating endeavors,” a film statement says.

“This recipe yields the most comprehensive look ever into the quest to progress snowboarding to previously  unimaginable heights.”
