Fast Fynn’s on fire

A young Queenstown triathlete competing for just two years has already made the World Championships.

Wakatipu High 15-year-old Fynn Thompson qualified for the under-19s section of the champs, to be held in Auckland this October.

Fynn needed a top-10 finish in the under-19s at the National Sprint Distance champs in Taupo last month. He came second.

“It’s going to be awesome,” Fynn says.

“This is really my second competitive season. Last year I got into it and it has built up from there. I just love the competition and the training – seeing the improvements you make.

“Then the racing and whole atmosphere of the events is quite cool too.”

The youngster will compete in the National Secondary School Triathlon Championships this month before focusing on the worlds.

“It would be great to travel overseas to go but then it’s a lot cheaper to get to Auckland, it’s a home crowd and family will be able to come to,” he says.

Fynn is trained by Queenstown swim coach Frank Wylie and Wanaka’s triathlon coach Val Burke. He has been finishing well in several of the Contact Tri Series events, including sixth overall in Wanaka and eighth overall in Whangamata.

“This is my main sport. I’m generally doing 15 hours a week split between all three [disciplines].

“I haven’t really done much of it through school. When you train in Queenstown you sort of get on to people – everyone knows the good coaches and it’s a hot spot for these sports,” Fynn says.

“Outside Sports have also been a great help.

“They’ve sort of semi-sponsored me with equipment and good deals.”
