The Kelvin Heights Ducks, last season’s whipping boys, sprang a surprise in the third round of the Mountain Scene Twenty/20 cricket league last Sunday.
The Ducks beat the Central Queenstown Pelicans by five runs to take the Ian Paterson Challenge Cup.
Assisted by four dropped catches, South African-born Rob von Elling scored 82 of the Ducks’ 131 runs.
The 20-year-old is a student at Queenstown Resort College, which sponsors the team.
After scoring only one win in their debut season, Kelvin Heights now have two victories on the trot.
In other results, Fernhill beat Frankton, Jack’s Point made it two wins in two weeks by defeating Arrowtown, and Wakatipu gained their first win of the season by downing Lake Hayes Estate.
Five teams – Central Queenstown, Fernhill, Frankton, Jack’s Point and Kelvin Heights – share the competition lead after two wins each from three games.
