Queenstown runner Louisa Davis couldn’t believe getting pipped in the women’s division of the 32km Routeburn Classic last Saturday.
The accountant led the race most of the way before being overtaken by winner Kristina Crane of Auckland in the final 5km.
Davis finished second, and just an agonising 57 seconds behind, in a time of 3hr 51min 58sec.
“When I got to the bottom of the hill I turned around and a girl was there,” Davis says.
“I tried to keep away from her for a wee while and gritted my teeth but my legs were going all over the show.”
Christchurch multisporter Jacob Roberts won the men’s category in 2:52.56. Queenstowner Adrian Bailey came second and Auckland’s Nick Hirschfeld was third.
