Queenstown ice hockey teams both won and lost the historic Erewhon Cup in Tekapo at the weekend.
Stampede entered two sides in the ten-team round-robin tournament, and both met in the final, with the Stampede over-23s beating their younger teammates 8-2.
The tournament is now in its 75th year and one of the oldest sports trophies in New Zealand.
Captain Simon Glass (right) says: “The Queenstown Rangers, the over-23s, were undefeated in all five matches. It’ll be good for team spirit. There were some good hits, good laughs and banter as well.”
In the national league, Stampede play bottom-of-the-table Botany Swarm, last year’s champions, at Queenstown Ice Arena this Friday and Saturday.
The Stampede must win both matches to have any hope of making the play-offs. The puck drop is at 7pm.
