Queenstowner Dave Mitchell (above), 49, rolled back the years to compete strongly at the recent waveski surfing nationals in Gisborne.

He finished runner-up to arch-rival Nigel Bryant in the New Zealand Open comp but turned the tables to beat him in the masters division.

With many NZ titles and world champion podium finishes behind him, Mitchell — AJ Hackett Bungy NZ’s CEO — says it was ‘‘great to be back competing again after a year off with Covid cancelling 2020 titles’’.

‘‘The surf this year was smaller than suited my waveski surfing, and strong offshore wind made it hard going for an old surf dog against the younger competitors, but I’m stoked with the result.

‘‘It was great to get back to Gisborne’s beautiful beaches and surf culture.’’
