Club makes a big splash

Queenstown Swimming Club finished second out of 33 teams in the recent New Zealand Junior Swimming Festival’s 12-and-under South Island meet in Invercargill.

Queenstown also had the top girls’ team.

Pictured back row, from left, are team manager Emily Nelson, Emmerson Dickson, head coach Albert Szaligyi, Madison Foote, Bethany Graf; middle row, Grace Haydon, Sara Jameson, Connor Paton, Sophie Hutchens; front row, Piper Bamford, Tallulah Nelson and William Marshall.

Sarah won the 11 years 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke and placed in two other events.

Madison was first in the 11 years 100m freestyle and placed in five other events.

Tallulah and Emmerson (both 10-and-under) and Bethany, Sara and Connor (all 12 years) all had placings, mostly several, while the girls’ 12-and-under freestyle relay team came second.

Eighty-six per cent of the team’s swims were personal bests, and six club records were broken.

The club views the results as a huge credit to Szaligyi, given the Events Centre pool was out of action for five weeks late last year due to falling ceiling tiles.
