Charging Stampede switch focus to final

Southern Stampede travel to Dunedin this weekend looking to maintain their momentum ahead of the
league final.

The Queenstown-based ice hockey team beat West Auckland Admirals twice at the weekend, securing home advantage for the final later this month.

Stampede slaughtered the visitors 11-4 on Friday with four goals from Matt Schneider and four assists from Mike McRae.

Schneider is currently the league’s top scorer for the season, on 19 goals, while McRae is the assist leader with 28.

Saturday was relatively closer – Stampede won 5-2 with three goals from import Jade Portwood. But the result never looked in doubt with Stampede 3-0 up before tit-for-tat goals in the third period.

Portwood leads the overall scoring chart with 18 goals and 22 assists.

Stampede players own the top five places in the overall chart as the squad enjoys a runaway season.

They’ve lost just once, winning 13 of 14 games so far, with 11 in regulation time.

The one loss was against champions Canterbury Red Devils, who they’re almost certain to face in a two-game final on August 15 and 22, with a decider on August 23 if necessary.

Stampede face Dunedin Thunder away on Saturday and Sunday.
