Wanaka snow star Byron Wells has continued his return from a broken back to podium at the European FreeSki Open.
Wells, 18, came third in the Superpipe at the Laax, Switzerland event – won by America’s David Wise. Canada’s Matt Margetts was runner-up.
The four-day competition at the weekend attracted 150 competitors from 18 different countries.
Wells, who broke his back in October, recovered quickly to qualify for the Dew Tour finals at Breckenridge, Colorado in December but fell in practice causing a shin stress fracture.
Last month he well and truly announced his return to top-spot contention with a fifth at the FIS Freestyle World Champs in Utah.
Byron is the second eldest of Wanaka’s four-strong ski and snowboarding Wells family.
