Boys time to sort Maniototo out

Same place, same opponent as last Saturday – but a different competition.

That’s what confronts the Arrowtown and Wakatipu Premiers rugby teams this Saturday.

Arrowtown, pummelled 51-9 by Maniototo in the Central Otago competition final in Ranfurly, travel there again for a Countrywide competition semi-final.

Arrowtown coach Simon Spark hopes his players’ “bruised egos” will motivate them.

“I just hope they’re not too beaten up that they go into their shells.

“After two thrashings by Maniototo this year, we need to sort it out.”

Wakatipu play Cromwell in a Countrywide playoff game at the Events Centre this Saturday, after succumbing 16-12 to them in a Central Otago playoff game at the same venue last weekend.

“We need to pick up our act and get a win to go into the summer looking a bit happier,” Wakatipu coach Kelvin Middleton says.

But he’s disappointed his players have to front up against the same team two weeks running.

“The whole idea of the Countrywide competition was to hopefully play more games against South Otago competition teams, but it so happens we’re playing Cromwell and Arrowtown are playing Maniototo.

“It’s not ideal – especially at this time of the year, you need to keep things fresh and interesting because players are looking at the top of the peaks and other options now available.”
