Boxer Callum’s comeback win

A Queenstown boxer has won his Canterbury Boxing Champs fight after 18 months out of the ring.

Callum Owen (right), 22, beat Dunedin’s Tom Bennett, 28, to win the senior improver bout in Christchurch last weekend.

Owen, who hasn’t fought since early last year due to illness, says his own performance surprised him against an opponent who was an intimidating size.

“When I got in the ring, I thought ‘Look at the size of this guy – he’s ripped’. I was freaking out at the size of him.
“I wasn’t expecting to go that well. The first minute in the ring was quite overwhelming – but then it all came back to me.”

Owen dished out several standing eight counts to Bennett and won the fight 23-3 on points.

Owen’s coach Darryl ‘Daz’ Giddens, who owns Queenstown Boxing Gym, says his young charge fought unbelievably well.

“He fought out of his weight class against a guy who was bigger than him and took him to pieces with body shots – he worked the body and then went up to the head.”
