Blind Bobby’s Queenstown thrills

A famous blind mountain biker is so thrilled with Queenstown he intends returning for his honeymoon next February.

Newly-married Bobby McMullen, 50, visited for the Queenstown Bike Festival with ride guides – who cycle in front and call out instructions – Mark Dickson, from Christchurch, and fellow American Yuri Hauswald.

McMullen entered the Super D Enduro at the Queenstown Bike Park and last Friday’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Enduro on Coronet Peak, running several legs in each event.

“It was really neat to be able to ride of the stuff that the top-level guys ride and to be successful,” he says.

“I couldn’t have done that without my guides and some of it was very tricky. The really friendly environment of all the athletes and organisers is something that’s very encouraging.”
