A queenstowner who captained the Kiwi ice hockey team at the world champs is now focusing on the national league.
Bert Haines (right), originally from Canada, led a young Ice Blacks squad through the championships in Iceland earlier this month.
“It was a tremendous honour. I believe I’m the first non-New Zealand-born captain.”
The Ice Blacks qualified for Division 2A after a silver in Melbourne last year. But injuries to senior players meant 10 rookies were in the squad. They lost all five games.
“It was definitely a development year but it will be a brilliant experience for them,” Haines says.
Haines now focuses on Queenstown-based national league team Southern Stampede – the full side is announced this week.
Queenstown Ice Hockey Club hosts the Leslie Coaching Academy, from Canada, at the ice arena from May 5-13.
