Top international women’s cricketer Suzie Bates, of Dunedin, was the guest star of a Queenstown girls’ cricket festival day last Thursday.
Bates, New Zealand’s player of the series during the recent Sri Lanka tour of NZ, says it’s good to see so many girls keen to give cricket a go.
Fourteen teams, comprising about 120 girls from years 5 to 8, played at the Events Centre.
“Having a girls-only day makes girls that might have thought about not playing ‘cos of the boys come along.”
Meanwhile the Arrowtown School girls’ cricket team, supplemented by Kloe Vermeir, from Queenstown’s St Joseph’s, finished fourth in a national tournament at Lincoln, near Christchurch, in the past week.
Indigo Little and Kloe finished among the top 10 batters and Claudia Watts was the fourth-highest wicket-taker with eight wickets.
