Audi New Zealand has signed up as naming sponsor of the Queenstown-based Winter Games.
The now-named Audi Quattro Winter Games NZ is the final major qualifying event for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.
Running from August 15-25, the event includes alpine skiing, snowboarding and cross country and is one of the world’s largest snow sport events outside the Winter Olympics.
Audi NZ general manager Dean Sheed says: “We were the first to host NZ’s leading ice and alpine drive programme in the Southern Alps – the iconic Audi ice experience – and internationally Audi is the key sponsor of a number of winter sports events and teams in the Northern Hemisphere, so the addition of the Winter Games sponsorship here in NZ is hugely exciting.”
Winter Games NZ chairman Sir Eion Edgar, of Queenstown, says the partnership is a major boost for winter sports in NZ.
“It enables us to achieve our objectives of profiling winter sports in NZ and proving our athletes and communities with a world-class event.
“Just as Audi pioneered the development of four-wheel-drive vehicles like the quattro, which we all now rely on to get us safely up to the skifields, so Winter Games NZ is breaking new ground for winter sports in the Southern Hemisphere.”
Meanwhile, SkyCity Entertainment Group has also come onboard as a sponsor.
Chief executive Nigel Morrison says: “SkyCity is thrilled to be supporting the Winter Games and to be contributing to such a high-profile series that showcases the Queenstown-Lakes region and its incredible landscape.
“The Winter Games helps celebrate all that is fantastic and unique about Queenstown.”
Winter Games NZ chief executive Arthur Klap adds: “Events like this are a big contributor to Queenstown and sponsors like SkyCity go a long way in ensuring the success of the event.”
