Arrowtown stun Ducks for third cricket title in row

Arrowtown has won the Mountain Scene Twenty/20 cricket league for the third season running.

The team yesterday (Sunday) beat top qualifiers Kelvin Heights Ducks in the final at the Events Centre after earlier beating Frankton Jets in the semi-final.

In the final, Arrowtown, after stumbling to 9 for 3 wickets, including a golden duck by captain Hayden Finch, finished with 109 after a half-century to Jarred Andrew.

It’s a total that Kelvin Heights, comprising largely club cricketers, were expected to run down.

They lost regular wickets, however, and the asking rate ballooned as their dot balls mounted.

Arrowtown bowled an accurate line and length, their fielders caught brilliantly – including two well-pouched outfield catches by Daniel ‘Pup’ Eyles – and they dismissed the Ducks for 78.

Key Ducks batsmen Eric Standfield and Kyle Paterson weren’t helped by calf and Achilles heel injuries, respectively.

In his after-match speech, Finch thanked the Central Queenstown Pelicans – who lost their semi-final to the Ducks earlier in the day – for barracking for his team.

“I think they put the Kelvin Heights boys under a bit of pressure.”

Finch, calling his team “a bunch of rough-looking rugby players”, says: “We don’t really know how we do it.

“I don’t think anyone can believe that Arrowtown won one let alone three in a row.”

Veteran Ducks skipper John Cushen hails Arrowtown’s achievement: “They’re a very good side.

“As I said to Finchy, ‘I suppose you practised up and unders at rugby training all week’.”
