Arrowtown rugby team says good-bye to momentum

The Arrowtown Premiers rugby coach is rapt with his team’s first outing but unhappy they face an enforced bye this weekend.

Coach Hayden Finch’s inexperienced team had a 16-11 home win against Alexandra last Saturday.

“We didn’t have much of the ball so we’re very stoked with just the sense of effort from our boys,” he says.

Arrowtown was due to play Upper Clutha B this weekend but their opponents pulled out before the start of the competition.

“It’s very, very frustrating,” Finch says.

“You’d think it would have been sorted out a few weeks ago.”

Title-holders Wakatipu thumped Matakanui Combined 44-3 at Omakau last Saturday.

“It’s always good to get a win under your belt first up,” coach Damian Petre says.

Wakatipu travel to play competition newcomers Roxburgh this Saturday.

The Wakatipu Wanderers – thrashed 51-0 by Maniototo in Ranfurly last weekend after trailing only 13-0 at halftime – are at home to Matakanui Combined.

SATURDAY’S DRAW: Wakatipu Wanderers v Matakanui Combined, Queenstown Recreation Ground, 2.30pm; Roxburgh v Wakatipu, Roxburgh, 2.30pm
