He’s dropped 25kg in two years and lifted his fitness to make the Otago under-19 rugby squad.
Brett Anderson is now 110kg and considers himself far more mature after his first year in the Wakatipu Premiers.
“Playing at a higher level, you learn a lot faster because you have to, otherwise you find yourself hurting,” says the 19-year-old, 1.98m-tall tighthead prop.
A building apprentice since leaving school in 2007, Anderson is one of only two non-Dunedin players selected last week in the 25-man squad.
Starting in Balclutha on Saturday with one of two friendlies, the team then play a six-game competition with Southland, Canterbury and Canterbury Country under-age teams.
Anderson has also had two seasons for the Otago Country under-19 cricket team – the last as captain – but he says rugby may take over “now that I’m fitter and making progress”.
