Too wet: Southern Lakes' top doubles team Tim Medland (left) and James Smith in a rain-cancelled doubles against Miles Paske and Matt Mill
The Southern Lakes tennis team has taken out the regional triangular title for the eighth season in a row.

Southern Lakes, with a commanding lead after the first leg last year, did enough in Dunedin at the weekend to retain the Rennie Trophy.

The side downed Southland nine matches to two on Saturday – one match was rained off. On Sunday, with play shifted indoors to fewer courts at the Edgar Centre, Southern Lakes needed just four wins from 12 available matches against Otago to secure the title.

Southern Lakes racked up four wins from the first nine matches before deciding mid-afternoon to forfeit the final three matches and get on the road for the three-hour drive back to Queenstown. Otago claimed the tie eight matches to four.

The Southern Lakes team were James Smith, captain Mark Milburn, Justin Russell, Chris Bradley, Tim Medland, Louise and Felicity Oxnevad, Hanna Speight, Sarah Patterson and Karen Mitchell.

The Southern Lakes B team – consisting of men only due to an unavailability of women’s players – won a play-off for third in the second division, downing North Otago B five matches to one. Otago B won the second division, beating North Otago A in the final. Earlier, North Otago A had beaten Southern Lakes B five matches to one and Southern Lakes B had beaten Southland B by the same score.
