A distinctive set of wheels (above) has been stolen.
The large white wheels, fitted with specialist Hankook tyres, were taken off a Toyota Hilux parked near the quarry in Lower Shotover last Sunday.
The vehicle was parked overnight and when the owner returned in the morning it was on bricks.
The owner, who declined to be named, says: “I just want to get them back.
They’re very distinctive and difficult to get hold of. If anyone is offered them I’d like them to report it.”
Two supermarket grazers have been busted for casually pilfering produce as they shopped.
An Englishman was spotted by staff “stuffing his face” with chocolates at FreshChoice. The 21-year-old, staying at a local backpackers, was arrested just after 6pm on Thursday. He was given a pre-charge warning for shoplifting.
A Frenchman, 26, who works at a local winery, was warned by police on Tuesday evening after tasting pistachio nuts. He decided he didn’t like them and refused to buy them, again at FreshChoice.
Senior constable Sean Drader says: “Every week people do this.
“Sometimes they’ll wander around and eat a whole bag of something before starting on another.
“They often try to claim it is legal in their country. But it’s not legal here and there are signs up to tell them so.”
Identity and theft
A man who gave false details to police when they caught him drink driving has been charged.
The 21-year-old Frankton man produced someone else’s driving licence when stopped on Friday two weeks ago. He was then questioned by police about a theft matter on Monday and admitted originally giving false details.
“These days with electronic fingerprinting and photos it’s only a matter of time before you get caught out,” Drader says.
“I’m not sure it happened in this case, but if someone lends their driving licence to someone else to use as ID, both people get charged.”
The 21-year-old was charged with giving false details and obstruction.
Lock before you leave
Police are warning motorists to lock their cars.
A 17-year-old was charged with theft after breaking into a car in Fernhill Road last Wednesday. He admitted stealing an iPod nano and sunglasses.
“We’re constantly warning people to lock their cars,” Drader says.
“It’s not surprisingly very easy for thieves to get into cars if they not locked.
“iPods are popular items to steal and they’re often left in cars. But people don’t think there’s a problem.”
Car runner caught
A dozy Uruguayan man was arrested after climbing over a car right in front of two police officers.
The 21-year-old dairy worker was spotted on Beach Street at 2.35am last Wednesday.
He climbed up and ran over the car and was promptly arrested. He was given a pre-charge warning for
disorderly behaviour.
