Lan Bale
Tennis coach Lan Bale is again staging the new fitness craze cardio tennis in Queenstown.

Bale jointly runs hour-long sessions at Queenstown Tennis Club with fellow coach Matt Davies and says the classes are open to players and non-players, young and old.

It’s the third season Bale has run cardio tennis in the resort – and he plans to host it from 5.30-6.30pm on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Tuesday and Thursday morning sessions will be available if there’s demand.

Bale first came across it in the United States where he coached at the University of California – whilst former Russian pro tennis sensation Anna Kournikova famously introduced cardio tennis to contestants on TV show The Biggest Loser last year.

Classes work best with between six and eight people – and prior bookings are preferred, Bale says.

“It’s a fantastic workout. You’re running around hitting some tennis balls with music pumping and it’s fun,” Bale says.

“The nice thing is when you’re hitting tennis balls you don’t realise you’re working out.”

Queenstowner Jay Cassells, 59, says he’ll be back for a third year.

“It works – I’ve lost weight, got a bit fitter. It’s a very pleasant way to exercise because it’s nicely disguised.”

Cardio tennis costs $130 for 10 sessions and $60 for four – details for bookings are at the Queenstown Tennis Club website.
