Goal-setter: Lucy Robins, 16, has made it into the Southland A NPC netball team
One of Queenstown’s top netballers has a huge new achievement under her belt – and she’s still in high school.
Wakatipu High’s Lucy Robins, 16, is the youngest person to be named in this year’s Southland A National Provincial Championship netball team.
The NPC competition is the highest in provincial netball, ranking just under the ANZ Netball Championships.
Wakatipu High Senior A netball coach Lauren Middleton says it’s a massive success for the capable teen.
She credits Lucy’s selection to her phenomenal versatility.
“You can put her anywhere and she’ll be awesome. She’s just a star.”
Lucy, who normally plays in defence positions, says she was excited to make the team.
“What can I say, I was so, so excited. I was one of the younger ones trying out, so it’s pretty awesome.”
Girl wonder: Lucy Robins
The youngest in the team by 18 months, she says the team is a “really cool group of girls” to play with.
“Some of them I have played with in other teams, some are still at high school. Some are in the Southern Steel squad to so that’s pretty cool.”
This selection is yet another achievement to add to Lucy’s rapidly-growing list of accomplishments in the sport – she has already represented Southland in the Under 19s twice and was a finalist in Central Otago’s Junior Sportsperson of the Year awards for 2011. Between Netball, training and school, Lucy says life is one big balancing act.
“It can be stressful at times. We’ve just had exams at school and between internals and externals it can get pretty busy.
“I miss out on a lot of social activities. People just expect me to be busy with netball on the weekends.”
Despite the enjoyment she gets from playing, Lucy says she is looking forward to summer for some relaxation and fun.
“It’s exhausting at times. It kind of sucks, but it’s so worth it.”
For the future, Lucy sets her sights high.
“I’m going reach as high as I can.
“Silver Ferns would be amazing, but just to represent NZ at any level would be awesome.”
