Queenstown Rovers women’s side is celebrating after having three points and 38 league goals reinstated after being stripped of them.
Two weeks ago, the resort team was reeling when Footballsouth women’s committee changed the result of Rovers’ record 38-0 thrashing of Invercargill’s JKS Queens Park in April – and turned it into a 2-0 victory for the opposition.
It was alleged the Queenstowners had breached a player registration rule by fielding striker Mary Fraser, who’d recently joined from Dunedin’s Roslyn Wakari.
The original decision has now been reversed on appeal, putting Rovers – who beat Winton 9-1 away last Sunday – firmly back at the top of the Southland Women’s Premier competition.
On Sunday, the girls were due to play the same Queens Park side they put the 38 goals past in the controversial season-opener.
But last night the game was pulled after the Invercargill team defaulted, so three points for a win will be handed to the high-flying resort team.
Meanwhile, the struggling Rovers men’s team went down 7-2 to Dunedin Tech at home last Saturday.
They don’t have a game this weekend.
