Havelock North’s Kurt McDonald (right) flies off a ski jump up Queenstown’s Remarkables mountain range last Sunday. 

McDonald, who came 28th in senior men, was among 151 starters in the first leg of the three-round New Zealand Mountain Bike Cup downhill. 

Contestants faced a 2.2km track with a drop of 375 vertical metres. 

Elite men’s winner George Brannigan from Havelock North clocked two minutes 26 seconds. Sarah Atkin of Wellington took out the women’s in 2:51. 

Queenstowner Kelly McGarry was second in the men’s 30-39 age group. 

Fellow Queenstowner Alanna Columb was third in the open women, two seconds behind runner-up Naomi Wilson, also of Queenstown. Queenstown’s Matthew Gilan was third in the under-15 men’s.
