Young wannabe musos from across the region battled it out at the Smokefreerockquest in Queenstown Memorial Hall last night.

Wakatipu High’s up-and-coming teen soloist Ruby Bain (pictured)was the only local to win the chance to submit a DVD and be selected to go through to the national final in September.

Bain claimed second-place honours and walked away with $400 in vouchers, while Mount Aspiring College’s rock band Mercury Brigade from Wanaka took out top spot and the $500 first prize.

Fellow Mount Aspiring act Affliction came third, with band Up The Creek Without A Capo from Cromwell College winning the People’s Choice Award.

Despite making up more than half the 18 entries in the regional final, Bain was the only Wakatipu High teen to get a placing, although local male soloist Hertzog won best song.

Best women musicianship was awarded to the bassist from Wakatipu High’s Talkback Amp, with the bass guitarist from Maniototo Area School’s only entry This Is My Forest taking out the MAINZ Musicianship Award.

Errors
1) The third place band was called AFFLICTION, not REFLECTION.
2) There were only 18 bands competing. Two pulled out from the original 20
3) The female musicianship award was won by the bassist, not the guitarist of TbA
4) The bassist of This is my Forest won the MAINZ Musicianship Scholarship for overall best musician. There is no specific male award.
