The Wakatipu Trails Trust was handed a $1.83 million boost today to help develop an 87km Queenstown cycle trail.

The project was given the go-ahead when New Zealand Cycle Trail programme manager John Dunn signed a funding contract with Queenstown Lakes District Council boss Debra Lawson and local councillor Vanessa van Uden.

On top of the grant, the Wakatipu Trails Trust is seeking about $3m to develop the local trail, which will expand to Gibbston and Arrowtown.

“I see the Queenstown Trail as a platform for economic development,” Dunn says.

“The cycle trails are important in their own right – but at the end of the day the Government is making a $1.83m investment in the Queenstown region.”
