Games finale: A scene from the closing ceremony of the inaugural Winter Games in Queenstown last year
The country’s tourism capital Queenstown has been virtually bypassed in the list of Tourism Industry Awards finalists announced today.

Amongst 34 companies and individuals, the only finalist with Queenstown links is last year’s New Zealand Winter Games.

Even then, it’s entered under “Lake Wanaka” despite the inaugural event being headquartered in Queenstown.

In past years, Queenstown has produced several supreme tourism award winners including Shotover Jet, Evergreen Lodge and skydiving company NZONE.

Amongst this year’s finalists are eight entries from Canterbury, six from Auckland and four from Wellington.

Categories include transport, attraction/experience, transport and activity.

The winners will be announced at a function in Auckland on October 14.

The annual awards are organised by the Tourism Industry Association.
