Queenstown Primary finishes the school year with a glowing report from the Education Review Office.
The Government agency has praised the school’s management and student achievement rates in official findings released this week.
The report says QPS has successfully transitioned to a Year 1-8 school after the Ministry of Education ordered it to include Year 7-8 pupils in 2009.
“The school has adapted and expanded its programmes to promote and challenge the learning of these older students,” it says.
Students’ learning is well-supported and promoted by the school’s curriculum: “The school’s collaboratively-developed curriculum provides students with a varied and engaging range of learning experiences.”
The overall quality of education has improved since ERO’s last report in 2008, it says.
But teachers, senior leaders and ERO staff all agree on the need to build on existing assessment practices to enhance reporting in relation to national standards.
The school is well-managed – shown by high expectations and robust appraisal to drive up the quality of teaching, plus effective collaboration between and within teaching teams.
Senior leaders and the board should develop guidelines to ensure a better self-review process, ERO recommends.
New school principal Dr Lyn Bird, who came on board after the ERO assessment, says she’s pleased with the findings.
“I’m exceptionally proud of staff who have put in a lot of hard work,” she says.
“It pays off, with a lot of quality teaching and learning programmes.”
