Queenstown rolled out the red carpet for some of the world’s best young violinists yesterday.

They were officially welcomed to the Michael Hill International Violin Competition at a function in Memorial Hall.

The 18 semi-finalists, all from overseas and including 19-year old Hyunjoo Choo from Korea (right), will take part in three days of competition from today. The top six then advance to the finals in Auckland on June 8-9 and 11.

“It’s the Olympics of music,” local mega-jeweller Michael Hill says.

The event wraps up its time in Queenstown at 1pm on Sunday with an open-to-the-public performance by 2007 competition winner Bella Hristova at The Queenstown Memorial Hall – tickets cost $25 and are available from Queenstown TicketDirect: 03 450 9005 / www.ticketdirect.co.nz.
