Police are appealing for witnesses after a dramatic car chase through Queenstown.
The driver of a dark blue Mazda sedan sped off along Gorge Road after officers attempted to stop the vehicle at Shotover Street roundabout at 2pm yesterday (Saturday).
About halfway along the road to Arthur’s Point, the car clipped another which had two young children as passengers, skidded to a halt and the driver took off on foot.
Landowner Mike Boyd says: “I was out in the paddock and tried to stop him. I grabbed him and tried to wrestle him a bit but I ended up just with his jacket in my hand.
“He was off, gone up into the hills. The police were about five seconds behind.”
A helicopter search last night of the hills was unsuccessful.
Police issued a press release naming a man they wanted to trace. There were concerns for his safety but officers say he has now been located.
No one has been arrested.
Sergeant Kate Pirovano says: “Attempts by police to stop the vehicle resulted in the driver fleeing along Gorge Road at high speeds.
“A short time later after a minor crash, the driver left the scene.
“If any member of the public witnessed the dark sedan driving erratically in or around Queenstown on Saturday prior to the crash, or were driving on Gorge Road near where the crash occurred, they should contact police,” Pirovano says.
