Wise-up for water

Queenstown gardeners who use irrigation will soon get expert advice on saving water as part of a council crackdown.

Queenstown Lakes District Council has asked horticultural guru Jo Wakelin to help it and residents learn how to use water wisely.

Wanaka-based Wakelin is the principal lecturer in horticulture at Otago Polytechnic and a published author specialising in dry-land planting and sustainable horticulture.

She’s joined to help with a major initiative aimed at reducing water use – QLDC hopes to wipe out a projected $100 million cost for excess use across the district in the next 10 years.

Water project manager Martin O’Malley says education is key.

“Jo will be able to help all gardeners, as we don’t have the expertise ourselves.”

Wakelin will offer free advice at the Queenstown Home Show at the Events Centre from February 15-17. She’ll also talk to community organisations like Lions, Probus and Rotary.
