A high-profile Queenstown winter sportsman arrested for unlawfully taking and interfering with a vehicle could also face a drink-driving charge.
The athlete, who has interim name suppression, allegedly got into a 1991 Subaru Legacy parked on Frankton Road at 3.30am last Saturday and drove it for about 30 metres before stopping, local constable Sean Drader says. “He was seen driving [a vehicle] a short distance.
“He parked it, got out and then he was seen sitting in a different car on the corner of Adelaide Street and Frankton Rd.”
Drader says the same witness saw the man get into both vehicles – the latter being a 1999 Subaru Legacy.
It’s unclear whether he drove the second Subaru, Drader adds.
“Turns out he was drunk when police dealt with him … there could be more charges there once the results of the breath [test] comes back.”
No other details were available.
The man is due to appear in Queenstown District Court on May 31.
