Winemaker in court over glass clash

A Queenstown winemaker is pleading his innocence over a disorderley behaviour charge.

Richard Hugh Guthrey, Remarkable Wines Ltd owner, initially faced an assault charge after a stoush with Gibbston Tavern owner Nicola Field.

The two own businesses next to each other and the court heard they’d clashed on February 16 over ownership of some drinking glasses.

Guthrey, 68, was accused of pushing Field in the chest but told Turner it was self defence after she’d hit him in the head.

On Monday police offered Guthrey diversion, but for that a defendant must admit they’re in the wrong.

Guthrey says he’d prefer to argue the downgraded charge of disorderly behaviour before a Justice of the Peace.

He was remanded at large until June 15.
