They call themselves The Chosens – and they probably are, judging by their trip of a lifetime.
Queenstown realtor Brendan Quill (centre), his brother Bede (right) and their mate, former Queenstowner Craig “Toolbox” Steele, left yesterday to follow the Tour de France.
They’ll join 10 other Kiwis who’ll ride as The Chosens ahead of the peloton during 20 days of the famous race.
“We’ll be riding all the classics, all the well-known stages,” Brendan says.
The team starts their 1000km-plus tour in Toulouse, where they head straight for the Pyrenees mountains – “we’ll be making 2000m-plus ascents” – followed by Provence, Mont Ventoux, to the Alps and through to Paris where the race ends in the Champs Elysees.
They’ve even had “lycra twin sets” specially made.
Brendan, who used to race competitively in national and international cycle races, hasn’t been on a racing bike in nine years.
He’s looking forward to watching old foes Hayden Roulston and Julian Dean represent New Zealand in Le Tour.
“I’m not competitive like I used to be. This trip is for fitness, for health and to watch the elite of the elite in one of the world’s greatest sporting events.”
