Queenstowners can cheer on one of their own when the next series of The Great Kiwi Bake Off kicks off tonight on TVNZ 1.

Wendy Banks (left), 43, is among a batch of 10 contestants vying for the title of New Zealand’s top amateur baker.

The Scotswoman’s cooking fetish began in 2004 when she received a KitchenAid as a
wedding present, and she’s enjoyed cooking and baking, almost daily, for her hubby and three boys ever since.

‘‘My whole life revolves around the kitchen, my laptop is actually on the benchtop, too,’’  Banks, a transportation engineer, says.

Family and friends egged her on to apply for the show — ‘‘I kind of feel like, ‘life’s short, why not give it a go?’

‘‘I’m an outgoing person, but this is another level.

‘‘Everyone around me is so excited, they’re beside them selves — I feel quite anxious.’’

Banks, also a race director for Queenstown Parkrun, says her signature bake is a caramel
slice.

She once sent a sample all the way to the States for friends to enjoy.
