Wakatipu mum’s private school push

An Arrow Junction mum is canvassing support for independent or private schools in the Queenstown Lakes district.

Lisa Guy is conducting an online survey and organising a public meeting next week to gauge interest.

Guy – who’s working voluntarily – says with existing Wakatipu schools and preschools close to capacity, families may want to consider quality alternatives.

“This is certainly not in opposition to the high school – we are going to need alternatives.”

The public meeting is at Queenstown’s Copthorne Lakefront hotel next Wednesday, at 5.30pm.

Her brother-in-law, Auckland principal Bruce Tong – who’s helped set up three independent schools – will outline various financial models and answer questions.

Guy says the developers of Queenstown’s Remarkables Park and Jack’s Point are both interested in providing possible sites.

“Their sites are big enough that if an independent school was going to come to town they’d look at doing it right across the [school age] board.”

Guy says an advantage of independent schools is they get to set their own agenda – “a chance to reflect the nature of our district and those who choose to live here”.
