Dedicated locals raised almost $5000 for charity – and trekked up 1103 steps in the gruelling Firefighter Sky Tower Challenge last Saturday.

About fifteen volunteers from Queenstown, Arrowtown and Frankton huffed up the 51 flights in Auckland in full firefighting kit, weighing about 25kg, along with hundreds of others from 120 brigades and stations around the country for the annual fundraiser.

More than $171,000 was netted for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation, with a combined effort from the Queenstown, Arrowtown and Frankton brigades adding $4,664.32 to the pot.

Frankton volunteer Diego Canepa was the fastest local to reach the top, finishing 14th overall with a time of 11 minutes and 43 seconds.
