Vet drives appeal for bushfire victims

An Arrowtown vet whose in-laws’ vineyard was razed in the Victorian bushfires has organised a local fundraising appeal.

“It’s too close to me to not do something,” says Nicky Viggers, who was evacuated herself during bushfires in Tasmania in 2006.

Viggers says her elderly in-laws are “very traumatised but are very, very lucky”.

They were in their Yarra Glen house, north of Melbourne, when fire raged through their property. But miraculously their home didn’t burn.

“As soon as my husband heard about the fires, he started driving to Christchurch to catch a 6am flight to Melbourne,” Viggers says. “He’s there now and his stories are horrfying.”

Wakatipu residents wanting to donate can email and Nicky Viggers will then give out details of a trust account she’s set up at Preston Russell Law.
