Queenstown’s first female mayor was sworn into office last night.
About 40 people witnessed Vanessa van Uden donning the mayoral chain of office, presented to her by Queenstown Lakes District Council chief executive Debra Lawson, at the Lake Hayes Pavillion.
At 43, Van Uden is also QLDC’s youngest mayor.
Old hands Cath Gilmour, Mel Gazzard, John Mann, Lex Perkins, Leigh Overton and Lyal Cocks were re-sworn to council, alongside Queenstown newcomers Russell Mawhinney, Simon Stamers-Smith, Trevor Tattersfield plus Wanaka’s Jude Battson.
Van Uden nominated re-elected Wanaka representative Lyal Cocks as deputy mayor since he won the most Wanaka votes – a move unanimously passed.
“I’m sure this is going to be a wonderful three years,” Van Uden says.
