An Italian tourist was airlifted to hospital after a serious car crash at the Kingston turnoff.

The woman suffered internal and back injuries in the crash. She was a passenger in a Mitsubishi car driven by her husband, which was T-boned by a ute as it made a right turn from State Highway 6 in Kent Street.

Her 38-year-old husband left shaken but uninjured is likely to face careless driving charges. The driver of the ute was uninjured. Firefighters spent 30 minutes cutting the woman free after the crash.

Queenstown emergency services also responded to another crash, on the Glenorchy-Paradise Road, half-an-hour earlier. A 26-year-old Australian driver lost control and spun into a ditch.

Blackford says: “He appears to have lost it on an easy right-hand bend.”

The vehicle and a fence were badly damaged but the man and his Australian male passenger escaped unharmed.
