Power outage caused by a transformer fire caused several businesses in Queenstown’s CBD to shut today (Thursday).
Repairs are underway to a transformer behind Botswana Butchery restaurant near the Queenstown Bay lakefront.
Businesses closed include Monty’s bar, Ray White Real Estate and Air New Zealand Holidays on Church Street and the British Lolly Shop plus Toi o Tahuna art gallery on Church Lane.
Power should restored by about 7pm tonight (Thursday), local Delta system control manager Graeme Johnson says.
Businesses supplied from the box should be plugged in overnight, he adds.
Russell Gray, chief executive of Good Group which owns Botswana Butchery, says he understands a contractor cleaning flues and the extractor system at the restaurant – ironically as part of its fire protection strategy – might have put ashes in a wheelie bin, prompting the fire.
