Tourist’s jaw broken in assault

A tourist’s jaw was broken during an assault in central Queenstown.

Police are searching for a man believed to have assaulted the Australian tourist about 12.30am yesterday, senior sergeant Paula Enoka says.

Details of the incident are scarce, but the alleged offender was spotted by CCTV leaving the scene with a group of friends shortly after the fracas.

The tourist was taken to the Lakes District Hospital after the attack and was transferred to Southland Hospital.

Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or who may know the identity of the alleged offender.

The man was wearing blue jeans and a dark beanie. The CCTV footage shows him being led away by his friend.

A female pushes him from behind and “looks pretty annoyed with him”, police say.

It was not clear what led to the incident, Enoka says.
