Tourist charged over ‘hit and run’

A 77-year-old American tourist has been charged over an alleged hit-and-run incident near Arrowtown on Tuesday.

The man’s silver Volvo estate car allegedly hit a bike being ridden by a Spanish man with a 3-year-old local boy as a passenger.

The pair were treated for minor cuts and bruises at the scene, in Malaghans Rd near Arrowtown, at 3.30pm.

The American has been charged with failing to stop to ascertain injury and careless driving.

Senior sergeant Paula Enoka says: ‘‘His explanation to police was he was going to get his cellphone and friends. He said he was going for help.’’

Enoka says investigations at the scene were consistent with the tourist’s claim he was driving within the speed limit, at about 80kmh.

He was breath-tested for alcohol and found to be under the 250mcg limit.
