Thumbs up for economic futures agency

An economic futures agency for the Queenstown Lakes District is a step closer to reality.

Recommendations made by local volunteers on the Economic Futures Task Force were accepted at two public forums in Queenstown and Wanaka last week.

With backing from about 40 forum attendees, it was agreed that Queenstown Lakes District Council be approached to find seed funding to investigate a model for an economic futures agency (EFA).

The model would be similar to that of the newly-established Events Office.

QLDC will also be requested to continue the involvement of the task force as part of the Shaping Our Future initiative, which delivered the Events Office.

No recommendation about future funding of the EFA was made, given the agency would be responsible for its continued funding.

Shaping Our Future Chairman David Kennedy says the organisation’s steering group will now submit a proposal for funding to the council annual plan.

Queenstown Chamber of Commerce chairman Charlie Phillips says an agency would offer a valuable overview that could bring together opportunity and provide a home for various strategic initiatives.
