Thrills and the spills

Novice Queenstown jockey Holly Taylor (right, front) fulfills her ambition to ride in the Glenorchy Races.

With Glenorchy friend Caro Rennebeck in tow, she storms to second on Rose in the double-banking race at last Saturday’s picnic race meeting. The race was won by Nicole Wallace and Per Lindstradt (below right) on Kate.

After watching last year’s event, Taylor – who manages Queenstown’s Eichardt’s Private Hotel – decided, “no matter what, I’m going to ride next year”.

“I stumbled across an Arabian Cross horse that ended up being really fast.”

Ironically, the double-banking race was sponsored by Eichardt’s business rival, Glenorchy’s Blanket Bay.

Taylor – who also rode Rose to another second and two fourths – fared better than Queenstowner Hayley Rand (below), who fell off her mount, Dooby, during the stockman’s race.
