1985 Fiordland Travel – now Real Journeys – announces plans for a vehicular ferry across Lake Wakatipu to create a shorter route to Milford Sound. The ferry would open up the 88km dirt road via Mount Nicholas and the Mavora Lakes and join the main Queenstown-Te Anau highway near The Key. Nothing comes of the idea, however.
1995 Between stints as Invercargill mayor, Tim Shadbolt begins a two-month cooking gig at the fondly-remembered Berkels Gourmet Burgers in Shotover Street.
