The fiancee of one of Queenstown’s most-loved musicians has the conductor’s baton for one of the world’s most popular musicals.
Emma Sykes (right) – soon-to-be-wife of blind pianist Mark Wilson – is the musical director for Showbiz Queenstown’s latest production, The Sound of Music.
Sykes was a classroom teacher in the United Kingdom for 20 years and has taught music to children of all ages and abilities.
While living in England she was the musical director of a brass band and since moving to the resort permanently last year, she has become one of the directors of the Queenstown Community Choir.
“I’ve got the leadership skills and the musical skills – and it will be an exciting challenge to combine these skills for this position,” she says.
“The Sound of Music is my all-time favourite musical so I’m really looking forward to it.
“And I’ll have the support of Mark, who has been a Showbiz musical director in the past, and [fellow former musical director] Cheryl Collie. It’s going to be great.”
More than 60 hopefuls are registered for this weekend’s auditions, starting at the Showbiz rooms on Isle Street tomorrow night.
Showbiz has also welcomed Remarkables Park Town Centre and Remarkables Park Limited back again as joint sponsors of this year’s production. Their contribution is essential to the show’s $100,000-plus cost – only half of which is met by ticket sales, Showbiz’s Hilary Finnie says.
