This bloodied driver of a Toyota Caldina (inset) who freed himself after rolling down a 15-metre bank at Arthurs Point yesterday afternoon speaks to a fire officer.

Just behind him is the silver Subaru his vehicle collided with just on the Arrowtown side of the Edith Cavell Bridge.

The Subaru’s occupants, a 36-year-old local woman and her one-year-old son, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Lakes District Hospital, St John Wakatipu manager Alana Reid says. Fire station officer Duncan Fisher suggests the road had recently been coated with a chemical de-icing agent.

“It may have still been wet,” Fisher says.

Police are investigating.
