A professional Latin guitarist for the past 20 years, Dunedin-based Ryan Sanchez — aka Dr Sanchez — performs in Queenstown’s Village Green at 5pm tonight.
He’s appearing as part of a Creative Queenstown mini music festival, ‘Listen Up, Wakatipu!’, marking Mental Health Awareness Week.
Embracing traditional as well as flamenco styles, Sanchez has played all over Europe and Australasia, from session work in Swedish recording studios to street performances in
Barcelona and contracts with large hotel chains like Hilton.
Also performing at ‘Listen Up, Wakatipu!’, which began on Monday, are 12-year-old vocalist
Tallulah Penetito (Lake Hayes Estate’s McBride Park, tomorrow, 2pm), DJ Joe Cowie (Pak’nSave, tomorrow, 6pm), Calico (Arrowtown’s Buckingham Green, Sunday, 12pm) and muso Milly Bea (Mitre 10 Mega, Sunday, 2pm).
Meantime, a planned Silk & Circus aerial performance, accompanied by cellist Lara Laverdure, at the Hanley’s Farm playground had to be pulled at the last minute on Tuesday night due to rain.
It’s been rescheduled and will now be held from 4pm today at the playground.
