Queenstown continues to prove itself as a top spot for domestic visitors.
Statistics New Zealand’s latest Commercial Accommodation Monitor for September shows strong domestic visitor growth for Queenstown, with a 3.2 per cent increase compared to the same month last year.
September’s results complete the Queenstown picture for the winter season, which show an overall 7.2 per cent increase in domestic visitors compared with last year.
International visitors still make up the majority of the market, with 66 per cent of total visitor numbers during winter.
Destination Queenstown chief executive Graham Budd says the overall result is pleasing.
“Domestic visitors continue to show excellent growth across all seasons while international visitor numbers, mostly Australians during winter, have shown a modest recovery against the difficult year in 2011.
“A number of factors have contributed to this including increased domestic marketing efforts by DQ and partners over the last 12 months. Improving air services and capacity growth over the past few years have also now made Queenstown very accessible to both first time and returning Kiwi visitors.”
